Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine has been a part of the written history of Chinese medicine for over 4000 years. SpicesAccording to legend, Chinese medicine started with Shennong, a legendary miracle doctor.

It is said that he had tasted a hundred plants in order to find useful medical herbs. Chinese herbal medicine employs roots, bark, flowers, seeds, fruits, leaves, and branches, as well as ingredients from animals and minerals.

When herbs are mixed together, their medical effectiveness increases. Moreover, these have a low risk of producing adverse reactions or side effects. Over 3000 different herbs can be used. But only 300 to 500 of these herbs are commonly used.

Characteristics of Chinese Herbs

The doctor usually concocts a remedy from one or two main ingredients appropriate for the illness.

Then he/she adds other ingredients to adjust the formula to the patient’s yin and yang condition, in order to neutralize  toxicity or side-effects of the main ingredients.

Unlike western medication, the balance and interaction of all the ingredients are more important than the effect of individual ingredients. Moreover, the key to success is the treatment of each patient as an individual.

How to Treat

Medicinal herbs must be gathered at the right time of the year, when they have the best therapeutic and medicinal value. In most cases, herbs and other medicinal materials are processed before they are used as ingredients of decorations. HerbsPots of the right kind – usually pottery – are used to prepare decorations, and the different ingredients are put into the pot for boiling in adhering to the order prescribed by the doctor.

In addition, special attention must be paid to the right duration and degree of heating as prescribed by the doctor. Prescription is, without doubt, the most significant thing. Different prescriptions are written for different diseases and even for the same disease, prescriptions may vary from patient to patient, according to the specific conditions of each one.

Prescriptions by famous doctors of all ages are inevitably compiled into books to be passed on from generation to generation as textbooks and guidebooks for students of traditional Chinese medicine.

Famous Chinese Doctor

Hua Tuo

Hua Tuo

Hua Tuo’s greatest achievement was in surgery. He invented the anesthetic herb solution, which was a general anesthetic. The procedure he used was as follows: At first the patient was told to swallow the anesthetic solution along with wine; when the patient dozed off like a drunken person, he cut open the patient’s abdomen. If he found a tumor he cut it off.

If it was an impaired intestine or stomach, he cut off the impaired part, cleaned the area, sewed up the wound and applied an ointment. About a week later it would heal up, and about a month later the patient would recover fully. Hua Tuo invented general anesthesia in the second or third century A.D., 1600 years before Western surgeons started using ether or nitrous oxide as a general anesthesia. He was not only the first surgeon in China, but also the first surgeon in the world to perform an abdomen operation with general anesthesia.

Sun Simiao

Sun Simiao (AD581-682) was a folk Chinese herbalist doctor in Sui and Tang dynasties. Born into Yao County, Shaanxi Province, he studied medicine very hard since his childhood, and accumulated rich experience in practice.Sun Simiao He set his mind on saving patients’ life, never pursued fame or fortune and finally became a knowledgeable physician.

During his many years in practice, he concluded that algae treats goiter, bran soup could prevent beriberi, Pulsatilla or hydrastis could treat diarrhea, and cinnabar or realgar could be used for sterilization. His preserved works, Qian Jin Yao Fang and Qian Jin Yi Fang, record many precious details on diagnosis, prevention, acupuncture, etc.

Sun, who made an outstanding contribution to pharmacy science in China’s history, was called the “Medicine King” by later generations. The mountain he frequently collected herbs on was also called the “Mount of Medicine King”, where there are still temples and ancestral halls that commemorate the great ancient physician.

Li Shizhen

Li Shizhen

The great pharmacologist Li Shizhen of the Ming Dynasty developed the science of material medicine to a a new level. In his book Compendium of Materia Medica, he gave a detailed account of the properties, flavor, origin, shape, way of collecting, process of preparation, pathological study and prescription of each species of herbal medicine.

Li corrected many mistakes in the classification of drugs, which had appeared in past works. He classified herbal medicines into 16 groups according to their natural origin and properties. Each of these groups are subdivided into 60 subgroups, making a creative contribution to drug classification.
