The Imperial Palace, also known as the Forbidden City, was the imperial palace of emperors in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Located at the center of Beijing, it was built in the 4th year of the reign of Emperor Yongle (1406) in the Ming Dynasty, and completed 14 years later (1420); it boasts a history of nearly 600 years.
There were 14 emperors in the Ming Dynasty and 10 emperors in the Qing Dynasty, who was enthroned and ruled here. The Forbidden City, rectangular in shape and 720,000 square meters in size, contains 9,999 room s, the floor space of which is about 160,000 square meters.
The palaces are surrounded by the purplish-red walls 3,400 meters long, and a moat 52 meters wide and 4.1 meters deep. At the middle of the four walls stands a gate tower respectively: the Meridian Gate in the south, the Godly Prowess Gate in the north, the Donghua Gate in the east and the Xinhua Gate in the west, and at each of the four corners stands a tower.
The whole Forbidden City looks like a strongly fortified castle. It is composed of two parts, the outer palace where the emperors held grand ceremonies, discussed state affairs with high-ranking officials and exercised their powers, and the inner palace where emperors conducted routine government affairs and empresses, concubines, princes and princesses resided, amused themselves and worshipped gods. There are over 920,000 pieces of valuable historical relics stored in the Imperial Palace. It is the largest and most complete ancient wooden architectural complex among the existing ones in China and in the world.

Situated on the northwestern outskirts of Beijing with a quiet and beautiful landscape, the Summer Palace was established in 1750 and used to be called the Garden of Clear Ripples. As an archetypal garden of the traditional gardening design, the Summer Palace, resorting to its surrounding mountains and water, radiates not only the grandeur of a Chinese imperial garden, but also the beauty of nature in a seamless combination that best illustrates the guiding principle of the traditional Chinese gardening design:” The works of men should match the works of Heaven”.
Its Tower of Buddhist Incense, Long Corridor, Marble Boat, Suzhou Market Street, 17-Arch Bridge, Garden of Harmonious Interest and Great Pavilion have become the symbolic architecture known to every household. On the banks of the Kunming Lake, there are also the famous Marble Boat, Bronze Ox true to life, Zhichun Pavilion for spring sightseeing and other scenic architectural spots. In 1900, when the Eight-Power Allied Forces invaded Beijing, the Summer Palace was ravaged again. In 1902, the Qing Government ordered its rehabilitation.
In the late Qing Dynasty, the Summer Palace became the main dwelling place of the top dominators of China. It is an important witness to the modern history of China, as well as the place where various major historical events took place. In 1924, the Summer Palace was opened to the public. On March , 1961, the Summer Palace was declared one of the first groups of historical and cultural heritage sites in China, to be placed under special state protection. On December 2, 1998, with its profound historical and cultural background, beautiful natural environment and remarkable protection achievements, the Summer Palace was listed as one of the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Yuan Ming Yuan, located on the western outskirts of Beijing, is adjacent to the Summer Palace. First built in the 46th year of the reign of Emperor Kongxi (1707), it is composed of three gardens, i.e. Yuanmingyuan, Changchunyuan and Qichunyuan, with an area of 350 hectares, including a water area of 140 hectares. It has over one hundred landscape gardens, with a total built up area of over 160,000 square meters. It was a large imperial garden built and managed by the emperors of the Qing Dynasty over a period of 150 years. It inherited the excellent gardening traditions of over three thousand years in China and integrated the garden architecture of different styles, as can be reflected by the fact that it had the splendor and grandeur of the imperial structures and the serenity and gracefulness of gardens in the waterside towns in South China, and assimilated some elements from European garden architecture.
Yuan Ming Yuan is well-known in the world for its vast land scale, remarkable building techniques, elegant architectural groups, abundant cultural collections and profound national cultural connotations. It was reputed as a “model of all gardening arts” and ”Garden of Gardens”. Unfortunately, this world-known garden was sacked and burned to the ground by the Anglo-French forces in October, 1860 and was later plundered and looted many times. Consequently, the grand garden fell into ruins. Now, with the relics as the main theme, Yuan Ming Yuan has formed a unique tourist scenery, in combination with a historic site.
