Changbai Mountain Nature Reserve

Changbai Mountain Nature ReserveChangbaishan (literally "eternally White Mountains") is located in the southeast of Jilin Province, near the Korean border. It is China’s largest nature reserve and is home to the rare Manchurian Tiger, snow leopards and wild ginseng.
Covering a total area of 2,000 square kilometers, Changbai Mountain Nature Reserve is a natural zoo and botanical garden of mammoth proportions. It is also part of UNESCO’S Man and Biosphere Program.
The most famous scenic area in Changbaishan is Baitoushan (White Head Mountain) and Tianchi (Lake of Heaven), a 2 million year old volcanic crater lake, located at the mountain summit. Tianchi has a circumference of 13 km and an average depth of 204 meters. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, hot springs and waterfalls, this area is considered sacred by both Koreans and Manchus.

Tianchi (Heavenly) Lake

The volcanic Tianchi Lake, with an area of 10 square km and an average depth  of              of 204 meters (373 meters at the deepest point), marks the boundary of China and Korea, on the top of Baitou Mountain, the main peak of the Changbei Mountains. Skirted on all sides by mountains, this lake is known for its sublime  natural beauty. Tianchi (Heavenly) Lake

Rimed Trees in Jilin

Rimed Trees in JilinThe rimed trees of Jilin are extolled as one of four major and natural wonders of China, along with the landscape of Guilin, the Stone Forest of Yunan, and the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River. In the winter the Songhua River keeps flowing through Jilin, despite the subfreezing temperature, and the vapor rising from the surface of the river freezes when it meets the branches of pines and willows ashore. Thus, encrusted with layers upon layers of ice, the tree branches and twigs look transparent and form a spectacular crystal world.

Songhua Lake

Spreading out in the middle part, southeast of Jilin City and among the Yongji City, Jiaohe City and Huadian County, Songhua Lake encompasses 425 square kilometers. The surface of the lake is at an elevation of 266.5 meters, with the deepest part of the lake being 77.5 meters. It has a water storage capacity of 10.8 billion cubic meters. It is the man-made lake on the upper reaches of Songhua River. The Fengman Hydropower Station is located at the estuary of the lake. The scenery of the lake is fantastic and charming, and is famous for its soft rime (or hoar frost). Points of interest include Aohua Platform, Stone Dragon Wall, Camel Summit, Five-Tiger Isle, and Reclining Dragon Pool. It is a key national scenic spot.

Jingyue Pool Park

Jingyue Pool Park, literally "Clear Moon Pool Park", lies 15 km southeast from Changchun City's downtown area. It is one of the largest artificial forests in Asia and a national forest park, where the ecological system is well protected. The place, with 150 square km in area and a total of 86 peaks, has become a scenic resort, where holiday makers go for sightseeing, recuperating, recreation, and other purposes. The 4.3-square-kilometer Jingyue Pool is regarded as a “sister” to Taiwan’s Riyue (Sun and Moon) Pool.

Capital Cities and Tombs of China’s Ancient Koguryo Kingdom

Capital Cities and tombs of China’s ancient Koguryo Kingdom were inscribed on the World Heritage List on July 2, 2004, by the 28th Session of the World Heritage Committee Convention in Suzhou, East China’s Jiangsu Province. The ruins are scattered in Ji’an City of Northeast China’s Jilin Province and Huanren Manchu Autonomous County of the neighboring Liaoning Province. They include remains of three cities and 40 tombs, Wunu Mountain City, Guonei City and Wandu Mountain City, with 14 tombs of imperial families and 26 of nobles. They all belong to the Koguryo culture, named after the dynasty that ruled over parts of northern China and the northern half of the Korean Peninsula, from 37 BC to 668 AD.
The selection committee also agreed to put the Complex of the Koguryo Tombs, which is inside the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), on the heritage list in 2004.

The Legend of Tianchi Lake

Long ago, a heavenly fire erupted at the top of Changbaishan Mountain, with billowing smoke. It took over a month for the fire to die out. Everything was scorched and burnt when the smoke finally disappeared. People from the villages at the foot of the volcano had to migrate, because it was unsafe to stay there. The heavenly fire was produced by the fire demon who ate fire. In order to kill the fire demon, a Manchu girl was summoned by the villagers. She went to heaven to ask for help form the gods. The villagers gave her a precious horse and a cluster of wild Rijina (azalea in Manchurian) to thank her.

The Legend of Tianchi Lake

They venerated her as Gege Rijina. In Chinese “Gege” means a princess who has a high reputation.
Gege Rijina climbed to the top of the volcano, where she was met with many difficulties. She pleaded with the wind god to blow the fire away, and prayed to the snow god to extinguish the fire. However, the two gods were unable to put out the fire, because of their limited power. Gege Rijina finally asked the swan god to fly to heaven, borrow a magic weapon from the king of the gods and subdue the demon. The swan god was deeply moved by her appeal and went to heaven. The king gave the swan god many ice blocks that were then given to Rijina. A heavenly fire burst out again one day in autumn, of the next year, when
The Legend of Tianchi Lake there was a full moon.
Gege Rijina climbed to the top of Tianchi volcano, with the ice blocks, and jumped into the crater with the help of the wind, rain and snow god.

After a tremendous explosion, the top of the mountain collapsed, forming Tianchi Lake.
After she defeated the fire demon, Gege Rijina escaped to heaven riding the swan. In heaven she was considered a daughter of the goddess. The original six female celestials became the seven female celestials when she entered heaven. From heaven she spread seeds of the Rijina flower and rare medicinal herbs over the mountain, in order to cure the villagers and bring them happiness. The Manchu people considered her a kind and honest goddess. The wild azalea has bloomed around the volcano ever since.
