|
The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was set up in 1958, 9 years after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Guangxi lies on the Beibu Bay of South China, it borders on Vietnam and is southwest China’s main artery to the sea. The Tropic of Cancer runs across the central area, bringing a humid subtropical monsoon climate to this region. There are so many magnificent natural scenes here that the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has long been considered one of the must-see attractions for domestic, as well as foreign visitors. In this newsletter, I’ll introduce you to some of its most popular points of interest. Come with me!

Guilin, situated in the northeastern part of Guangxi, covers an area of over 500 square kilometers. The world-renowned scenic city is one of the most popular national historical and cultural cities and it's an excellent tourist destination in China. A distinctive karst landmass is the reason behind Guilin’s fabulous landscape, that is green mountains, sparkling waters, strange caves and statuesque monoliths. Famous scenic areas in Guilin are Lijiang River, Elephant-Trunk Hill, Folded Brocade Hill, Whirlpool Hill, Reed Flute Cave and Seven-Star Cave, etc. |

East of the Li River and one kilometer away from downtown, lies Seven Star Park, whose name is derived from the Seven Star Cave. It sits on an area of 40 hectares and is the largest and most beautiful park in Guilin. The park boasts green hills, crystal water, fantastic caves and beautiful rocks.
The ancient Floral Bridge straddles at the southern entrance. Hidden-dragon Cave near the southern gate houses the Forest of Stone Inscriptions. To the east of Seven-Star Hill stands the Camel Hill, at the foot of which US president Bill Clinton made a public speech on environmental protection in 1998. The Seven-Star Cave, the zoo and the potted landscape Garden are all worth visiting. |

Described as “Art Place of Nature”, the stalagmite and stone flowers of grotesque shapes in the caves create breathtaking spectacles which are really a feast for the eyes. Half way up the Brightness Hill, Reed Flute Cave is seven kilometers northwest of the center of Guilin. There used to be a special kind of reed growing outside of the cave which was an ideal material for making flute. Inside the U-shaped Karst cave are a large number of stalactites, stalagmites, stone pillars, stone curtains, and stone flowers, all glistening in colorful lights. In a distance of 500 meters between the entrance and the exit, there are more than 30 interesting sights, including “Pine in the Snow”, “Mushroom Hill”, “Virgin Forest”… The Reed Flute Cave is justifiably called the “Art Place of Nature”.

Elephant Trunk Hill is located on the western bank of Li River. The shape of the hill looks just like a huge elephant drinking water from the river with its trunk, and that's how it got its name – the Elephant Trunk Hill.
Shui Yue Cave (literally, Water Moon Cave) is between the trunk and the legs, which is a semi-round cave flooded by water. The inverted reflection of the cave in the water, plus the part above form a full moon. This phenomenon is unique and many laudatory inscriptions were found on the wall inside the cave. Visitors can boat through the cave to the river.
Another cave regarded as the eyes of the elephant lies in the hillside. It provides tourists an ideal position to enjoy the panoramic view of Guilin. On the top of the hill is a two-story pagoda, built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and surrounded by green trees. The north side of the second floor is inlaid with an image of Bodhisattva Puxian. The pagoda looks like a precious vase on the back of an elephant seen from a distance and many beautiful legends about the pagoda have been told with good wishes.
As the symbol of Guilin, Elephant Trunk Hill is the main scenic spot of the Elephant Trunk Hill Park, which also includes Yunfeng Monastery (a building with ancient style), Aiqing Dao (Love Island) and so on. |

Yangshuo, 65 kilometers southeast of Guilin, is a county (population 300,000) directly under its jurisdiction. It is located in the upper reaches of Gui River and Li River runs through it. The county sits on a typical karst topography, where there are green mountains and jade-like streams everywhere. The scenery along the Li River is superb, and a traveler of the Ming Dynasty Xu Xiake (1586-1641) described it as “the land of green lotus and jade-color bamboo shoots.” Yangshuo boasts four major scenic areas, with over 20 scenic spots, each with its own unique qualities. Furthermore, the landscape changes color and looks different, along with the changing seasons. Of particular interest to visitors are Green Lotus Peak, Yangshuo Park, Mount Painting, and Mount Moon. There is a very popular saying about this area: “Guilin’s scenes are the finest under Heaven, but Yangshuo’s are still better.” It is a very popular travelers’ destination in its own right and certainly a good place to live and work, with a variety of opportunities. The town draws millions of visitors form both home and abroad. Living in Yangshuo is undeniably a way of showing you are a lover of mountains; which is not to say that all the people of Yangshuo spend their leisure hours gallivanting among the forests of the high country, but that they adore its beautiful scenery.

The 34 kilometer-long Ling Canal was built between 219-214 BC. It is today’s most intact ancient water conservancy project in the world. It was scientifically designed and exquisitely built, linking the two water systems of Yangtze and Pearl rivers, and has served as the communication hub, between the Central Plain and Linnan, since the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC). In recent years, Xing’an County of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region invested 30 million Yuan (US $2.6 million) in environmental protection and tourism development. It has become a new tourist attraction in the Guilin scenic area.
The four ancient water conservancy projects in China are the Ling Canal in Guilin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Dujiaugyan Irrigation Project in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, the Grand Canal from Beijing to Hangzhou and the Karez, an irrigation system of wells connected by underground channels and used in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
