Nanchang – The Historical Revolutionary City |
Being over 2,200 years old, the city with significant history - Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi province, has been serving as the political, economic and cultural center of middle and east China.
Nanchang belongs to the sub-tropical monsoon climate, bringing locals mild and pleasant weather for almost all year round. Gan River, the mother river of local people, traverses through this beautiful city, while scattered lakes and rivers in or around bring a special kind of charm. Thanks to its clear water, fresh air and great inner cityvirescence, it is honored as a green pearl in the southern part of China.
Long and splendid history endows Nanchang with many cultural relics, among which the Prince Teng’s Pavilion is the most namable. It is no exaggeration to say that PrinceTeng’s Pavilion is the pride of all the locals in Nanchang. Many literates in history left their handwritings here which tremendously enhance its classical charm.
| Like much of Jiangxi, Nanchang is full of significant moments in China’s Communist history. The Nanchang Uprising, which took place on August 1, 1927, was one of the first major clashes between Communist forces and Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist troops. August 1 is celebrated today as the anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). |

In the early Han Dynasty (201 BC), a city called Gan was constructed.
In 589 AD (Sui Dynasty), it was renamed Hongzhou, and eventually Nanchang.
In 653 AD, the Prince Teng’s Pavilion was constructed. In 675 AD, Wang Bo wrote the classic “Prince Teng’s Ge Xu” (in literal, Prelude of Prince Teng’s Pavilion). The building as well as the city became celebrated for Wang’s introduction article. The Pavilion has been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout China’s history. In its present form, Prince Teng’s Pavilion was reconstructed in the 1980’s after being destroyed in 1929 during the Chinese civil war.
In 1927, the Nanchang Uprising took place.
In 1938, the Battle of Nanchang took place.

Qingyunpu
Qingyunpu was the residence of Zhu Da (1626-1705, a noted painter of the Qing Dynasty, when he lived here in seclusion. Hundreds of authentic pieces of his calligraphy and paintings are displayed in the residence, all valuable art treasures.

Hundreds of Flowers Islets (Baihuizhou)
Built in the traditional style of Chinese gardens, Baihuizhou is known for its causeway, bridges, pavilions, artificial hills, and flower nurseries. It is said that in ancient times, the landscapes of this island could rival those of West Lake in Hanghzou.

Street Views
There are two major streets in Nanchang. One is Ximachi, the downtown area at the crossroads of Zhongshan Road and Shengli Road. The other is Bayi Avenue. This long, wide street runs through Nanchang, with most of the city’s major buildings lining it. Renmin Square (the People’s Square) in the middle section of the avenue can accommodate more than a hundred thousand people.

Other Attractions
Other attractions worth a visit are Prince Teng’s Tower and Pure Gold Pagoda (Chunjinta). The mountain resort of Lushan in northern Jiangxi makes for an interesting trip both for natural beauty and the colonial architecture left behind by its former Western residents Longhushan (literally Dragon and Tiger Mount), not far from the Fujian border in the East and is being toured as a new Guilin-style holiday resort.

By Air
Nanchang Changbei International Airport (KHN) was built in 1996. It is located in Lehua Town, about 26 kilometers (aobut 11 miles) north of the downtown area. Changbei International Airport is the only one in Jiangxi Province which has an international air route. Airplanes here can take you to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Haikou and other major cities in China. The only international air route at this time is to Singapore.
By Train
Built in 1996, the Nanchang Railway Station is about three kilometers from the downtown area. Trains leave here for Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’anChongqing, Shenyang and other cities. Nanchang Station is the only provincial capital station lying in Beijing-Kowloon artery line.
By Long Distance Bus
The road system in Nanchang is fairly good. National roads No. 105 from Beijing to Zhuhai, No. 320 from Shanghai to Kunming, and No. 316 from Fuzhou to Lanzhou intersect here, making it very convenient to get in or out of Nanchang city. Major transport companies are the Chang’an Transport Company Limited, the Nanchang Long-distance Bus Station, and the Xufang Bus Station. Buses from the first two stations primarily leave for Nanjing, Shenzhen, Hefei and other cities outside Jiangxi Province; buses from Xufang Bus Station go to cities, towns and counties within Jiangxi Province.
By water
Water routes in Nanchang consist of the Gan River, the Fu River, Elephant Lake, Qingshan Lake, and Aixi Lake. Nanchang Port is the biggest port on the Gan River and also one of the most important water transportation transfer points in Jiangxi Province.
| From Nanchang Port you can travel by yacht or passenger ship to visit Prince Teng’s Pavilion, Poyang Lake, Stone Bell Hill, Dagu Hill and other attractions. |
